Weekend Preview: Cranksgiving

I’m psyched about Cranksgiving, and the main reason is this: The name is fun to say.

Beyond that, Cranksgiving is a very cool combination alley cat race and canned food drive. Cyclists will meet up at noon at Mars Cafe for registration and pre-game fueling, and the race begins at 1. Participants must buy a list of goods from 12 different stores–and the route they take is up to them.

Last year’s event collected over 2000 pounds of food. If you fancy yourself a big city bike messenger, head out to Mars at noon on Saturday the 22nd and get yourself signed up. No entry fee so you can buy all those groceries. There are prizes to be had for the winner in each of the following categories:
Overall Guy
Overall Gal
Top Out-of-Towner
Top Fixed Gear
Top Junior (under 18 yrs)
Top Single Speed (or fixie with brakes)
Most Money Spent
DFL

Believe me, if I had anything better than Scott’s hand-me-down mountain bike (from the 8th grade), I’d be out there. As it stands, the race is giving me the excuse to use a scooter for enthralling as-it-happens road race coverage.

All-lady cycling club Punk Rock Cycling is behind this event, and you can head over to their blog for up-to-the-minute information.
