F.A.Q.
How do I get involved?
Rock Iowa is a volunteer driven media network. There are opportunities for writers, editors, photographers, videographers, marketers and more. No previous experience is necessary – in fact, many of our contributors were attracted to Rock Iowa in order to learn new skills. Please e-mail Keri at keri@rockiowa.com with your name, age, phone number and primary e-mail address as well as a brief inquiry. You do not have to be located in Des Moines to be part of Rock Iowa.
Will you feature me/us?
Oftentimes artists or bands will stumble across Rock Iowa for the first time and hastily fire off an e-mail asking us to “check them out”. While we’re always eager to learn about new people and projects in our community, the more specific and informational you can make your communications, the better. Consider what is interesting or newsworthy about your project, what our audience would be interested in learning, and what kind of unique or exclusive access you can provide. Make a pitch. If you can’t tell us what’s interesting about your project, odds are we won’t be able to tell our audience.
And please, take a moment to look around Rock Iowa and read all of the FAQ before dropping us a line – e-mails starting with “I know you only cover rock music, but…” are headed straight for the recycle bin.
How do I get Rock Iowa at my event?
Rock Iowa occassionally provides on-site and live coverage of cultural and community events. A media partnership with Rock Iowa can provide a unique multimedia experience for your audience and sponsors. We have partnered with a number of live events including 80/35, the Des Moines Tattoo Festival and Little BIG Fest. For inquiries regarding having Rock Iowa at your event, please contact scott@rockiowa.com with the event date and details and a brief description of what you have in mind.
Can I post your photos on my site?
While we are excited that you like our photos enough to want to share them, we prefer that you link to galleries instead. Every post on Rock Iowa has handy buttons on the bottom to share on popular social media sites such as Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter. Our photographers are primarily volunteers, and the ad revenue from photos hosted on our site helps pay for the expenses of maintaining Rock Iowa. Believe it or not, either Rock Iowa or the original photographer owns the copyright to any of our photos, even if it’s a photo of you or your band! That being said, it never hurts to ask, and if you’d like to inquire about a special usage of photos on Rock Iowa or the Rock Iowa Flickr, please contact scott@rockiowa.com
Can I embed and share Rock Iowa videos?
Absolutely! For our own videos, we primarily use blip.tv to host. The blip.tv player has embed and share buttons built-in. In addition, the video player on rockiowa.tv has a large and easy to access Embed button on the left hand side. Simply copy and paste that code anywhere on the web and you’ll be sharing Rock Iowa videos in no time. We occassionally post videos to YouTube or re-host content from other players that may have their own sharing and embedding options available.
Can I download Rock Iowa videos?
Subscribing to our Podcast or visiting blip.tv is the easiest way to get Rock Iowa videos for your iPod, iPhone, or other portable media players. These downloads are provided as a service to our audience and are not an invitation to repost Rock Iowa videos to other video sharing services. If you are having trouble using embed codes to re-post any Rock Iowa videos, please contact us ASAP and we’ll be happy to help.
Does Rock Iowa only cover rock music?
Nope! We know it’s a tad confusing, but the “rock” in Rock Iowa is a verb to us. “They rocked that show.” “That art rocks!” Rock Iowa is dedicated to covering authentic, independent culture and community be it art, theatre, rock’n'roll, indie, punk or any number of other scenes and genres.
Where are you located?
Rock Iowa is proud to make it’s home at the Market Street Media Foundry, a collaborative art and media studio in Des Moines’ market district.
Address:
Rock Iowa

Can I send you our CD?
Sure! Check the contact page for mailing information. While it’s always fun to get packages in the mail, it’s worth including a note or dropping an e-mail in advance to let us know why you sent it in the first place. Options include: just for fun, consideration for Rock Iowa radio, consideration for written review, etc.
How do I get my event added to your calendar?
Rock Iowa’s event calendar is editorialized – i.e., it’s more of a curated playlist than a comprehensive event database. Drop a note to one of our contributors or event editors if you’d like your event to be considered for inclusion on the calendar.
How do I advertise with Rock Iowa?
Please contact Scott Kubie at scott@rockiowa.com or call 515-771-7602 with advertising or sponsorship inquiries. There are a number of advertising options available including video pre-rolls, RSS feed ads, website banner ads and event partnerships. More information is available on our advertising page.
