Guaranteed Good Times: August 6th – 12th

Submitted by Adrienne Gross on August 6, 2009 – 11:45 amNo Comment

Zechs Marquise (with TV Ghost, Blutiger Fluss, The Erased Life, and zechsBuster and The Punks)

Vaudeville Mews – Saturday, August 8th, 4:30 pm – Showtime: 5:00 pm – All Ages – $7 (rock/progressive/psychedelic)

I’m sure many of you know the name Omar Rodriguez-Lopez—guitarist for the Mars Volta.  However, you must also learn to know the names Marfred and Marcel Rodriguez-Lopez.  The brothers of Omar formed Zechs Marquise, along with Marcos Smith and Matthew Wilkson, in order to form a more perfect union of beautifully crafted progressive rock.  Even if you have never heard of Zechs Marquise, you must attend this show and then walk over to People’s upon its completion for a full and well-rounded night of prog rock.

Dredg and Rx Bandits (with As Tall As Lions)dredg

People’s – Saturday, August 8th, 6:30 pm – All Ages – $15 advance/$17 door (rock/progressive)

The progressive music scene hits Des Moines hard Saturday night with this show at People’s.  Almost four months to the day from their last show in Des Moines, Dredg returns in support of their new album.  I, for one, am excited to finally be able to see them after hearing great things about their live show and strong musicianship from several people.  I am equally excited to see Rx Bandits, a band I have followed for almost ten years, yet never seen live.  They are one of those bands that have grown immensely over the years (back in the day they were much closer to a ska classification), yet remain true to their roots.  Excellent.  Finally, As Tall As Lions rounds out the lineup.  Another band that word of mouth backs tremendously.  Be pumped.

 portugalPortugal. The Man

Vaudeville Mews – Tuesday, August 11th, 5:00 pm – Showtime: 6:00 pm – All Ages – $10 (alt/soul/pop)

Sarah Palin isn’t the only thing to come out of Wasilla, Alaska.  Originally from Wasilla but based in Portland, Portugal. The Man creates unique, textured music that you just can’t describe.  Their style varies and incorporates many different genres—from post-hardcore, to experimental, to synth-based jams.  Although many songs are instrumental, when lyrics are involved the vocals are just as unique and tend to rely on vivid imagery.  Seriously, why would you want to miss this show?
