gomezGomez

People’s – Tuesday, July 21st, 8:00 pm – 21+ – $18 advance/$21 door (rock)

Coming all the way from across the pond, England’s Gomez will be appearing at People’s this Tuesday and will be BRINGIN’ IT ON (couldn’t help it—their first album is entitled “Bring It On”).  Impressively, their lineup has not changed since they started out in 1996.  I find this commitment and sign of brotherhood to be very impressive.  Gomez is one of those bands you will end up enjoying even if you don’t particularly care for their “type.”  Several styles are melded together in creative and innovative ways, with diverse instrumentation and blending of voices.  Plus, the songs are catchy.  Can’t deny a catchy song!

gogolGogol Bordello

People’s – Wednesday, July 22nd, 7:00pm – All Ages – $23 (rock/gypsy punk)

I will not be attending this show, but you should.  Here’s why:  Gogol Bordello was one of those bands I had heard mentioned a lot, but never really checked out.  Several people told me they could not be missed and put on a great show. They played the last day of the Sasquatch Music Festival and one of my companions was dead-set on being in front of the stage for them.  Having heard they were amazing, I complied and we worked our way up to the very front of the stage.  After dancing through the Santogold set, I was jacked.  I was ready to see this amazing band!  The crowd was pumped and we continued working our way up front.  Now, I’ve been to punk shows before andknow what to expect:  the band starts, everyone rushes forward, you get crushed, the crowd gets worked up into a frenzy, people will crowd surf, you might get elbowed.  I thought I was prepared.  I was not.  The rush andfrenzy they create is such that after the push forward, my feet were not on the ground.  The momentum of the crowd kept my feet off the ground as the bodies I was pressed against moved up and down.  This was fun!  But then I got punched in the head.  And then kicked.  Then someone stepped on my sandal and cut the top of my foot.  I made it through two songs before I needed to get out and find fresh air.  So, there you have it.  You should go to experience but stay away from the front unless your survival skills are strong.
