Guaranteed Good Times: June 11th – 17th
Capgun Coup, Bear Country, Baby Shanks & The Carl Weathers
Collective, and Conchance
TWO SHOWS! Both starting at 9pm with $5 admission
Sunday, June 14th: Des Moines Social Club
Monday, June 15th: The Ames Progressive
Looking for a great showcase of Midwestern talent? Well, here’s your chance-and you get two of them! Sunday night in Des Moines and Monday night in Ames, you can catch this excellent assortment of bands. Capgun Coup, hailing from Omaha and proud members of Conor Oberst’s Team Love Records, started off as an experiment in avant noise that melded with pop sensibilities, resulting in an album ripe with the nostalgia of sweaty basement shows. Bear Country, also of Omaha, will bring, true to their name, a folkier variety of indie rock to the stage. Baby Shanks & The Carl Weathers Collective is actually Adam Robert HauG of Oh possum playing his solo material, with the backing band comprised of members of oh possum/deep sleep waltzing and wet chemistry. Finally, Conchance is another Omaha band and will be rounding out the set with some hip hop. Come one, come all, but do come anticipating a good time!
Battlefields (with Host and Monstro)
Vaudeville Mews – Sunday, June 14th, 5:00 pm – Showtime: 5:30 pm – All Ages – $7 (rock/progressive/metal)
Lately, I’ve been in the mood for something a little well . . . harder. Late winter and early spring seemed to set the mood for Americana and indie pop, but now it’s time to rock a little harder. Battlefields will do just that. First of all, they have a really badass name. That cannot be denied. Second, they have been described as “the missing link between ISIS and Converge.” To that, I say: BRING IT.
Caroline Smith and the Good Night Sleeps (with The Daredevil
Christopher Wright and Derek Lambert)
Vaudeville Mews – Sunday, June 14th, 9:30 pm – Showtime: 10:00 pm – 21+ – $7 (indie/folk/pop)
So Caroline Smith and the Good Night Sleeps have played here in the past few months and have received my recommendation before . . . that’s not stopping me from doing so again! I attended the show the first time and was very surprised. Even the group of drunken med students who were previously not paying any attention to the bands all gathered up front, eventually breaking out into line dances (I KID YOU NOT). This band is fun to watch and Caroline Smith’s voice is a force to be reckoned with-come on, she used to open for B.B. King and Mason Jennings! If they play the same encore as last time, or even anything remotely close, it alone will be worth the $7 admission . . .
