Guaranteed Good Times: April 9th – 15th
Electric Six (with Bang Camaro and North of Grand)
Vaudeville Mews – Thursday, April 9th, 7:30 pm – Showtime: 8:30 pm – 21+ – $12 (rock)
It was hard to narrow things down this week-so many great things going on! This show has been pretty hyped for awhile, and for good reason. Electric Six is GOOD TIMES. You shouldn’t even need my guarantee to understand this. Mixing garage, disco, punk, new wave, and metal into catchy, energetic, and ridiculous songs, Electric Six will rock your face off. Bang Camaro, whom I became familiar with after one of their songs was used on Rock Band, will be bringing the fun, as will local band North of Grand.
Dredg (with Torche and From Monument To Masses)
Vaudeville Mews – Saturday, April 11th, 9:30 pm – Showtime: 10:00 pm – 21+ – $15 (metal/pop/rock)
I have friends who saw Dredg live last year that have still not recovered. There’s not much more I can say, except that I almost skipped going home for Easter (my favorite holiday) to see this show. Ultimately, the promise of Cadbury Eggs and family time won out, but it was close-real close. Strong musicianship and deeply involved songs will bring you to your knees. Torche is also well worth the $15 ticket-hard and beautiful. Rounding out the night is From Monument to Masses. Yet again, beautifully textured, intense music. BRING IT.
Unwed Sailor (with Little Brazil, Ely Falls, and The Rugbies)
Vaudeville Mews – Wednesday, April 15th, 5:00 pm – Showtime: 5:30 pm – All Ages – $8 (experimental/rock/indie)
When I first started college, an older, wiser friend gave me a list of bands I had to listen to. Unwed Sailor was on this list. This is my happy music. Music that is so good on its own that vocals are not needed and would in fact detract from the beauty. This is simplicity and complexity combined to form something utterly majestic. And I hate sounding cheesy, but frankly, that’s the truth. For those of you who cannot live without vocals, the supporting bands will be there for you. Little Brazil, from Omaha, will have you singing along and snapping your fingers a bit. Ely Falls and The Rugbies, both from Des Moines, bring different styles, but similar quality-it’s good stuff that deserves your attention!
