Guaranteed Good Times: April 30th – May 6th
The Silent Years (with Cashes Rivers and Menlo)
Vaudeville Mews – Friday, May 1st, 5:00 pm – Showtime: 6:00 pm – All Ages – $7 (indie/pop/rock)
The Silent Years create beautiful indie pop music. The kind that makes you smile, yet stays far away from cheesiness. Just a few listens on Myspace and I knew this band was worthy of a plug (I recommend “Open Up Our Eyes”). I’ll let you listen for yourself, but trust me-The Silent Years are enjoyable. Local acts Cashes Rivers and Menlo are also well worth the outing to the Mews. Cashes Rivers’ has the kind of voice that will just make you instantly feel great. I can guarantee you will leave this show with a jump in your step and a handful of great songs stuck in your head.
Go Kart Mozart
Mars Café – Saturday, May 2nd, 8:30 pm – All Ages – Free (indie/visual/pop)
This Saturday, Mars Café will be hosting a free show by traveling band Go Kart Mozart, stopping in Iowa from California while on tour. There are two reasons you should come to this show: (1) to support Mars Café, a great local business that is doing so much for our community; and (2) to see and support a fun, live band as they make their way across the country. The price is right. Go Kart Mozart is a completely independent band who recorded, mixed, and funded their album themselves, as well as all artwork, booking, merch, etc. Should be a great time! Stick around after the show for Finn Miles with the Seedlings-more great music! Grab a booth, grab a chai (my personal favorite), and prepare yourself for a great night. A great night at a bargain cost.
The Ghost Is Dancing (with Bradley Unit and the Members, Derek
Lambert, and Christopher The Conquered)
Vaudeville Mews – Monday, May 4th, 9:30 pm – Showtime: 10:00 pm – 21+ – $5 (indie/pop/rock)
More beautiful, dreamy indie pop. I like the kind of music that seems appropriate to listen to early in the morning while traveling-The Ghost Is Dancing is one such band. Hailing from Toronto, the band has been building a lot of hype while touring and promoting themselves. Further, reviews of their shows detail incidents of stripping down to their underwear. I mean, who would want to miss out on that?! Particularly when backed by such a strong lineup of supporting acts. And, as I was just informed, ghosts are the new robots.
