Guaranteed Good Times: March 5th – March 11th

Jenny Dalton (with Murzik, Why Make Clocks)

Vaudeville Mews – Saturday, March 7th, 9:30 pm – Showtime: 10:00 pm – 21+ $7 (alt/pop/rock)

jennydaltonYet another unique female vocalist from Minneapolis will be gracing the Vaudeville Mews this week.  Backed by moody piano, Jenny Dalton’s vocals have been described as beautiful, haunting, and classic.  She has drawn comparisons to Kate Bush and Tori Amos, but Jenny Dalton is one of a kind.  Her most recent album, the concept album Rusalka’s Umbrella, has been co-released with her first book, Daughters of the Dead Sea.  Both are based on the water element, using a water theme as a symbol for change.  Also visiting from Minneapolis, Murzik will bring a little Russian style to the party.  Their music is likewise beautiful and will be sure to impress all with its unique instrumentation.  Local boys Why Make Clocks will be warming up the crowd as well.  The combination of these three bands is a force to be reckoned with, that’s for sure.

Brown Shoe (with The Huxley Maxwell Exit, Gabe Cordova)

Vaudeville Mews – Monday, March 9th, 9:30 pm – Showtime: 10:00 pm – All Ages – $5 (indie/rock)

brownshoeCalifornia indie band Brown Shoe is stopping by Des Moines on its way to SXSW.  Like many of my “picks,” Brown Shoe makes beautiful yet melancholy music with layered instrumentation and lyrics that will break your heart anew.  If you listen carefully, you will be forced to relive your most traumatic breakup, yet you will love every minute of it.  West Des Moines alt rockers The Huxley Maxwell Exit will be playing as well, as will Gabe Cordova.  Both of these local acts will get you nodding your head and tapping your toes.

Brave Citizens (with Tyke, For Now and Forever, Fire Alarm Fetish, Maximilian Eubank)

Vaudeville Mews – Tuesday, March 10th, 5:00 pm – Showtime: 5:30 pm – All Ages – $6   (alt/pop/rock)

bravecitizensAnother California band will be gracing us with their presence this week on their way across the country.  Interestingly, Brave Citizens started off as a laptop recording project between vocalist Andrew Capra and guitarist Adam Bialik.  The two would record in closets and garages, sharing their ideas between Los Angeles and San Francisco.  Those laptop recordings eventually became Revolutions, the band’s debut EP.  Their music combines the basics of rock with pop sensibilities and ambient appeal-resulting in an end project that defies any one genre.  In true Vaudeville Mews fashion, a kaleidoscope of local bands will be starting off the evening.  There’s bound to be something in there that will appeal to everyone!
