Guaranteed Good Times: March 19th – 25th
Eulogies (with Middle Distance Runner, Modern Day Satire, For Now and Forever, and Rodeo Drive)
Vaudeville Mews – Sunday, March 22nd, 5:00 pm – Showtime: 5:30 pm – All Ages – $7 (indie/pop/rock)
Eulogies, an L.A. based indie rock band, will be stopping in Des Moines after a SXSW stint. Formed as a backing tour band for singer-songwriter Peter Walker, Eulogies makes sun-soaked, haunting music. That might seem like a contradiction, but when you hear them, you will understand exactly what I mean. The extra-catchy Modern Day Satire will be accompanying Eulogies, as will For Now and Forever and Rodeo Drive.
Black Diamond Bay (with MRPF3, Max Jury, and Cashes Rivers)
Vaudeville Mews – Wednesday, March 25th, 5:00 pm – Showtime: 5:30 pm – All Ages – $5 (indie/rock/rock)
Hailing from Montreal, Quebec Canada, Black Diamond Bay-also coming to us post-SXSW-is another band formed from people coming together to support a solo artist that resulted in the formation of a band. Their sound is best described by me as bluesy indie rock; the band calls their current album “anxious, blizzard, dark, violent, climax.” While I sincerely hope their music will not bring on a blizzard, the other adjectives fit them to a T. MRPF3, “reference rock” from Ames, will help build the mood for the violent climax. Max Jury of Des Moines will provide the soul, while Cashes Rivers, also of Des Moines, will soothe us with some acoustic indie. Be prepared.
Red Gorilla Music Fest
Maintenance Shop – THREE NIGHTS: Sunday, March 22nd through Tuesday, March 24th, 7:30 pm – Showtime: 8:00 pm – All Ages – $4 per show [$2 day of increase], or $10 for all three days (Indie Ro
ck)
The “real” Red Gorilla Music Festival is being held in Austin, Texas, this week. Not associated with SXSW, the Festival showcases up and coming artists at free venues across Austin as SXSW is going on. The Festival is no
w known as a great place for artists to make their mark. A condensed version of the fest is coming to Ames after the Austin one concludes. Each ni
ght will feature three bands. The lineup may change, but for now plan on: Sunday à Andy Elwell; Monday à Pictures of Then and Motion Pilots; and Tuesday à Mighty Fairly and 3 Pill Morning. Travel the half hour up north and get the feel of SXSW without the hurt on your pocketbook!
