Guaranteed Good Times: March 12th – 18th
Bonnie Prince Billy (with Begushkin)
Vaudeville Mews – Monday, March 16th, 7:30 pm – Showtime: 8:00 pm – All Ages – $18 (alt/rock/folk)
A lot of “big names” are coming through Des Moines this next week. I would recommend saving now-there are a lot of shows you are not going to want to miss! On the top of that list is Bonnie Prince Billy at the Vaudeville Mews. I don’t think I really have to say much to convince you to go to this show-we’ve all been pumped for this one for awhile! As a little treat, you should watch this video featuring Will Oldham and Zach Galifianakis. Nevertheless, prepare yourself to be entertained and inspired by Will Oldham’s “do-it-yourself punk aesthetic and blunt honesty.” Brooklyn’s Begushkin will get you riled up with their equally unique stylin’s.
Pieta Brown
Vaudeville Mews – Friday, March 13th, 6:00 pm – Showtime: 6:300pm – All Ages – $10 (folk/roots/Americana)
Iowa’s own Pieta Brown will be bringing her bluesy folk to the Mews this Friday. Described as a “songwriter of great depth,” Pieta’s lyrics and sultry, dark voice will draw you in. A lo-fi yet texturally rich sound, this show will bring you back to her experiences growing up across Iowa and Alabama. If looking for a fun and safe way to spend your Friday the 13th, you’ve found it.
DeVotchKa (with She Swings, She Sways)
People’s Court – Wednesday, March 18th, 8:00 pm – $20 (folk/indie/rock)
DeVotchKa has been around for over a decade, but didn’t start gaining national attention until they were chosen to score Little Miss Sunshine, a score for which they were ultimately nominated for a Grammy and their music was played at the Academy Awards. A fusion of Romanian, Greek, Slavic, Bolero, and Mariachi styles with folk and indie roots, the music of DeVotchKa forms an intense tapestry of sounds that will keep you entertained for every second. Also entertaining us this evening will be Iowa’s own She Swings, She Sways-featured recently in our very own mini-documentary, A Midwestern Sound, which if you haven’t watched yet, you must be sure to!
